Safe zone and tips
- Keep text and logos out of roughly the top and bottom 250 px (about 14%), as Meta recommends for Stories.
- On Reels the caption, audio label and buttons cover more of the bottom and the right edge; leave extra room there.
- Reels also appear in the feed and on your profile grid as a cropped preview, so keep the subject in the middle of the frame.
- Horizontal or square video is accepted but shown with empty space around it; shoot vertically when you can.
Making a 9:16 image from a phone photo
A typical 12-megapixel phone photo is 3024 × 4032. The largest 9:16 area you can cut from it is 2268 × 4032 pixels: crop to that, then scale it down to 1080 × 1920. Cropping first and scaling second keeps everything in proportion.
The calculator is set to 1080 × 1920. Enter your own width and height to see their ratio, or type a new width in box 2 to get the height that matches.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for Instagram Reels and Stories?
Use 1080 × 1920 (Vertical, full screen, 9:16).
Which aspect ratio should Instagram Reels and Stories use?
9:16. Crop to the ratio first and then scale to the size in pixels, so nothing is stretched or cut off unexpectedly.
Do Stories and Reels use the same size?
Yes. Both are 9:16, and 1080 × 1920 is the standard size for each. The difference is the overlay: Reels add a caption and action buttons at the bottom and on the right, so keep important content a little further from those edges.
