Safe zone and tips

Making a 9:16 image from a phone photo

A typical 12-megapixel phone photo is 3024 × 4032. The largest 9:16 area you can cut from it is 2268 × 4032 pixels: crop to that, then scale it down to 1080 × 1920. Cropping first and scaling second keeps everything in proportion.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for YouTube Shorts?

Use 1080 × 1920 (Vertical, full screen, 9:16) and 1080 × 1080 (Square, 1:1). The first one is the safest default.

Which aspect ratio should YouTube Shorts use?

9:16 and 1:1. Crop to the ratio first and then scale to the size in pixels, so nothing is stretched or cut off unexpectedly.

Can a YouTube Short be horizontal?

No, Shorts need a vertical or square shape; a horizontal 16:9 clip is published as a regular video. To make it a Short, crop it to 9:16 (for example 608 × 1080 out of a 1080p frame) and scale it to 1080 × 1920.
