Instagram feed posts can be portrait, square or landscape. Portrait 4:5 at 1080 × 1350 is the classic tall format, and since 2025 Instagram also accepts even taller 3:4 posts at 1080 × 1440, the same shape as the profile grid. Square 1:1 still works everywhere, and landscape can be up to 1.91:1. Instagram keeps photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide at their original resolution and resizes anything outside that range.

Safe zone and tips

Upload at 1080 px wide. Wider files are scaled down, and narrower ones are scaled up and look soft.
Photos taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1 are cropped to fit, so crop them yourself first to control what stays in the frame.
The profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 preview, so square and 4:5 posts are trimmed at the sides there; keep faces and text near the centre.
In a carousel every slide takes the shape of the first one, so use a single ratio for the whole set.

Making a 4:5 image from a phone photo

A typical 12-megapixel phone photo is 3024 × 4032. The largest 4:5 area you can cut from it is 3024 × 3780 pixels: crop to that, then scale it down to 1080 × 1350. Cropping first and scaling second keeps everything in proportion.
