Safe zone and tips
- The caption, sound and account name sit at the bottom, and the like, comment and share buttons run down the right side. Keep text and faces away from those areas.
- Leave a margin at the top as well, where the Following and For You tabs appear.
- Landscape 16:9 and square videos can be posted, but they do not fill the screen; crop to 9:16 for the best result.
- Make on-screen text large enough to read on a phone and keep it up long enough to be read.
Making a 9:16 image from a phone photo
A typical 12-megapixel phone photo is 3024 × 4032. The largest 9:16 area you can cut from it is 2268 × 4032 pixels: crop to that, then scale it down to 1080 × 1920. Cropping first and scaling second keeps everything in proportion.
The calculator is set to 1080 × 1920. Enter your own width and height to see their ratio, or type a new width in box 2 to get the height that matches.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for TikTok videos?
Use 1080 × 1920 (Vertical, full screen, 9:16).
Which aspect ratio should TikTok videos use?
9:16. Crop to the ratio first and then scale to the size in pixels, so nothing is stretched or cut off unexpectedly.
Can I upload a 1920 × 1080 video to TikTok?
Yes, but a horizontal video only fills a band in the middle of a vertical screen. To use the whole screen, crop it to 9:16 (for example 608 × 1080 out of a 1080p frame) and scale it to 1080 × 1920, or reframe it while editing.
