Recommended sizes for X (Twitter) post images
Safe zone and tips
- A single image is usually shown in full, but with two to four images each one is cropped to fit a grid; keep the subject in the centre.
- Link cards use the page’s preview image; wide images around 1.91:1 to 2:1, such as 1200 × 628, suit them.
- Use PNG for screenshots and graphics with text, and JPG for photos.
Making a 16:9 image from a phone photo
A typical 12-megapixel phone photo is 4032 × 3024. The largest 16:9 area you can cut from it is 4032 × 2268 pixels: crop to that, then scale it down to 1600 × 900. Cropping first and scaling second keeps everything in proportion.
The calculator is set to 1600 × 900. Enter your own width and height to see their ratio, or type a new width in box 2 to get the height that matches.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for X (Twitter) post images?
Use 1600 × 900 (Landscape, 16:9), 1200 × 675 (Landscape, 16:9), and 1080 × 1080 (Square, 1:1). The first one is the safest default.
Which aspect ratio should X (Twitter) post images use?
16:9 and 1:1. Crop to the ratio first and then scale to the size in pixels, so nothing is stretched or cut off unexpectedly.
Should X images be 16:9 or square?
16:9 (for example 1600 × 900) matches how a single landscape image is shown and suits screenshots and video stills. A 1080 × 1080 square takes more vertical space on phones. Both work; avoid very tall images when posting several at once, as they get cropped in the grid.
