Safe zone and tips
- The round profile photo overlaps the lower-left part of the header; leave that area empty.
- Phones and computers crop the header slightly differently, so keep text away from the top and bottom edges.
- Keep text short and centred: on a phone the header is only a few centimetres wide.
Making a 3:1 image from a phone photo
A typical 12-megapixel phone photo is 4032 × 3024. The largest 3:1 area you can cut from it is 4032 × 1344 pixels: crop to that, then scale it down to 1500 × 500. Cropping first and scaling second keeps everything in proportion.
The calculator is set to 1500 × 500. Enter your own width and height to see their ratio, or type a new width in box 2 to get the height that matches.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for X (Twitter) headers?
Use 1500 × 500 (Header, 3:1) and 400 × 400 (Profile photo, 1:1). The first one is the safest default.
Which aspect ratio should X (Twitter) headers use?
3:1 and 1:1. Crop to the ratio first and then scale to the size in pixels, so nothing is stretched or cut off unexpectedly.
Why does my X header look cropped?
The header is displayed at different sizes on phones, tablets and computers, and parts of the top, bottom and lower left (behind the profile photo) can be hidden. Make it 1500 × 500 and keep important content in the central band.
